UCA SEPTEMBER MEETING
Our September UCA meeting was our first actual meeting since May. Our June meeting was spent working together to assemble kits, etc. for our LetterWorks Conference.
Now, with LetterWorks successfully behind us, we were excited to do some lettering again and were fortunate to be instructed by Brecken Cook, our teacher of the month and our UCA President.
Brecken called the meeting to order with most of the seats filled, and the room buzzing with excitement. There were the familiar faces, as well as several new faces at the meeting.
Introductions were made, announcements reviewed and then Brecken turned some time to Faye Maxfield our UCA Treasurer. Faye presented the annual budget report, and the meeting commenced.
Learning to use a pointed pen can be tricky for those who have never tried, and, often for those who have tried and given up. Brecken was well prepared with handouts and expert knowledge of the subject. By using a document camera, she was able to demonstrate what we were to do so that all could see and follow.
We didn't start off using pen and ink, but Brecken had us use our pencils to practice the strokes first. At last, it was time to dip our nibs into the ink and try our hand at making the strokes while using pen and ink. It was a little difficult at first, but at the end of our time, many came away feeling they had gained a new skill. Of course, this requires a lot of practice at home, so we hope that is what everyone is doing. We look forward to seeing the work everyone has done in the past month, so be sure to bring your work for all to see.
One of the resources Brecken used is The Zanerian Manual of Alphabets and Engrossing. This book contains wonderful examples of pointed pen lettering and instructions on Roundhand or Engrosser's Script.
This book is available from John Neal and Paper & Ink Arts for $28.00. Amazon does not carry it, but some of their third party providers do--but these copies are very expensive.
