The weather on Saturday, February 18th was much nicer than the month before, and UCA members gathered at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center to learn a lot about the Uncial calligraphic hand taught by Erika Paulsen.
The Uncial hand dominated writing from the third to the eighth centuries, and yet we still use it today. It is such a beautiful hand to look at and a very satisfying one to put down on paper.
Erika went through the Uncial alphabet with everyone. She made it exciting by using chalk to make the large letters while writing on black. She also had everyong write the letters with a wood stick pen using ink on newspaper. This proved a little challenging for some, but very interesting. Everyone seemed to have an enjoyable time. It was so nice to have a large group there as opposed to last months small attendance due to the bad weather.
Our annual John Neal Book Fair was a success thanks to Lyn Lynch and her valiant efforts. Lyn has taken over the position which Lee Sim held for several years. Most everything sold and an order will be coming in time for our next meeting in March.
My thanks to Lyn Lynch for the photos used in this account of the February Meeting. She did this for me while handling the store!
